By Start Editorial Staff Trends come and they go, as do companies who are hot one year and not the next. This year, however, slightly more than half of the 2005 Hottest Companies winners repeated, which is quite an improvement over the 40.2% seen the year before. One interesting trend appears to be with the product-lifecycle management (PLM) software providers who showed up big in 2003, then took a break last year before reappearing with force this year. What’s interesting about PLM is that it’s one of those technologies that can make even the most antitechno-manufacturing executive enthused because of its ability to really streamline the product development process, enabling products to be produced quicker and at a lower cost. But PLM isn’t the only story this year. The automation control companies remain a force in manufacturing as businesses continue to look to them for sophisticated technology that can be joined with existing legacy systems on the plant floor and out in the field. And with this comes the software companies who are able to collect this information to provide a historical perspective on plant operations. And let’s not forget those technology providers that keep track of all these assets on the plant floor and throughout the entire enterprise, as well as the enterprise resource planning (ERP) and supply-chain management (SCM) providers that are helping to keep expenses down. Each of these technologies is important in the overall manufacturing arena, as they sort of work in concert with one another. That’s why we believe it’s important to honor those who have been working tirelessly to keep the manufacturing industry humming, efficient, and successful. These companies are part of the reason why manufacturing in the United States continues to surpass productivity levels of years passed, and doing it with many fewer people. This is a good thing/bad thing situation. On the one hand, manufacturers have had to let people go, and for a variety of reasons, but on the other hand, opportunities are opening up for more high-tech and higher paying jobs in manufacturing. Please take a moment to read over who we believe are the Hottest Companies serving the manufacturing industry. —Start Staff
